Standards: back to basics

Heleen van den Hombergh was 16 when she started to sing jazz standards, intrigued by the magic of music she had never known before. Borrowing all vocal jazz records from the music library of Groningen to learn and enjoy, and trying out her own first steps at school. On her first solo album, Heard in the Scene, she recorded Gershwin's My Man's Gone Now, and I Loves you Porgy, but after that only published her own compositions.

The love for jazz standards has not faded, and with this small collection of songs, recorded with Steffen 't Hart on piano on Friday morning rehearsal sessions between 2015-2017, the listener gets a glimpse of her takes of standards. No special arrangements; just the piano and her voice trying to do right to the song and the moment. Back to basics.
